Martha F. Watts was born circa 1812, daughter of William L. Watts, in Virginia.2
Martha and Stephen Turner obtained a marriage bond on 8 March 1843 in Amherst County, Virginia, with Jesse T. Wood as security and David Appling as witness.1
The Marriage Return was received by the court in Amherst County, Virginia, on 8 March 1843.3
I am unable to find either of them in the 1850 census as of 6 Dec 2020.
On 5 January 1857, Stephen Turner, in his will named his wife Martha F., formerly Watts; friend, James D. Watts to administer, with witnesses Francis A. Blair and David Appling. The codicil, undated, was written because he had surved Jas. D. Watts and Francis A Blair. Codicil witnesses were H. E. Smith, R. C. Appling. The codicil directed that his wife administer his estate. Henry Smith qualified. Bondsmen: Jno. W. and Philip Pleasants, Jas. W. Pleasants, Jas. N. Pryor, Danl. H. Rucker, Jno R. Cunningham.
An inventory of his estate was recorded in Dec 1870 in the sum of $347.00 by Jno. W. Pleasants, Jno. R. Cunningham, and Louis P. Pleasants; the carryover amount brought the total value to $498.50. This was recorded 13 Jan 1871.4

He was 27 years of age and living in Calexico, California where he was an engineer for the Imperial Water Company No. 6 on water canals. He was single and is described as being tall, slender with blue eyes and brown hair.
Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. Obviously, not everyone who was registered for the draft was drafted or served in the military.
The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31 (men born between 5 Jun 1886 and 5 Jun 1896), meaning he had to register.2
He evidently married Loreto Villal-Escusa who was born in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico c 1896 with whom he had two children: William Lawson Wells, born 1 May 1933 in Mexicali, B. C. Mexico and John Euegene Wells, born 31 Jul 1934 in Mexicali, B. C. Mexico.4,5

William Lawson Wells, 90, native of Oregon, died Tuesday at the family home at Halsey following a long illness. Funeral services are to be held Friday at 10 a.m., from the Halsey Methodist church, with the Fisher funeral home in charge. Burial will be in the Shedd cemetery. Rev. O. L. Covault will have charge of the services.
Mr. Wells was born, Jan. 6, 1859 at Hubbard, Or. As a child he lived at Buena Vista and later at Dallas, while he was sheriff of Polk county from 1890 to 1894 and Polk county judge from 1896 to 1900. He had made his home at Halsey since 1903. Four of his sons and daughters are teachers. One daughter, Goldie Ruth Wells, is a missionary to South Africa.
On Dec. 3, 1887 he married Sarah Frances Murphy at Independence. She died in 1931. He married Winifred Snyder, Nov. 3, 1932 at Halsey, she survives.
The following children also survive: Leroy Wells, Halsey; Elbert G. Wells, Mexicali, Mexico; Goldie Ruth Wells, Eugene; Gladys Helseth, Ontario; W. Lawrence Wells, Porterville, Cal; and Genevieve Kendall, Paso Robles, Cal., also a brother, John Wells, Portland. Mrs. Roy Hedlund, Brownsville and Earl Snyder, Sweet Home are stepchildren. Fourteen grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren also survive as do a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Wells had been a member of the Methodist church since early childhood."1

They lost their oxen along the Snake River and had to leave their wagon of goods there and continue their journey in the wagon of Will Kenady, eventually arriving in Oregon on September 13, 1853. Another baby was on the way and in October, Mary Susan was born. They lived about a year near Aurora, Clackamas County, before moving to Benton County at Bell Fontaine, near Philomath where they lived until 1859, when they moved to Marion County near Hubbard. In 1867, they moved to Polk County, bought land near Buena Vista and built the family home where they lived the rest of their lives. They are buried in the family at Buena Vista Cemetery."
G. W. Kennedy, son of George's sister Mary Ann, wrote The Pioneer Campfire, Clarke-Kundret Printing Co., 1914, which tells the story of their trip across the plains.7
