Howell Richard Moss Jr. was born in 1844, son of Howell Richard Moss and Dionitia Tempe Davis, in Warren County, North Carolina.3

It is odd that he's listed on the Register of Moore Hospital, Richmond, Virginia as H. R. Moss, Pvt, Company C, 12th NC Regiment, with Chronic Diarrhoea as being admitted 7 Jul 1862 and on furlough 8 Jul 1862. He's again on the register of the Medical Director's Office, Richomond on 24 Sep 1862.4

Howell Richard Moss Jr. began military service on 1 May 1863 at Norfolk, Virginia, by Capt. Davis for the duration of the war. He is said to be 17 years of age.5

He was wounded at South Mountain, Maryland, possibly on 2 Aug 1863.6

On 19 July 1863, he was captured 19 Jul at Martinsburg and taken to Baltimore. He was sent to City Point, Maryland 19 Aug as a prisoner of war.7

     On 17 March 1864, he was exchanged.8

Howell Richard Moss Jr. ended military service on 9 April 1865 he was paroled at Appomattox Court House as a Prisoner of War belonging to the Army of Northern Virginia, who have been this day surrendered by General Robert E. Lee to General U. S. Grant.9

Howell Richard Moss Jr. and Roberta A. Fleming obtained a marriage license on 18 June 1865 in Warren County, North Carolina, with H.R. Moss Jr and John R. Tally as security.

She was his first cousin, according to David Gammon.1,10

I absolutely cannot find either of them in the 1870 or 1880 census as of 17 Dec 2016.

I found a burial on Find A Grave of Richard Moss, son of William Howell Moss and Sarah Rives Moss. This man was born 1843 in Warren County, died 13 Jul 1920 in Christian County, Kentucky, and was buried in Powell Cemetery, LaFayette, Christian County, Kentucky. There's no way his parentage information can be correct.11
