John was born circa 1826 because in the Chancery Court hearing held on 6 and 7 Apr 1849, he is said to be 23 years of age. I suspect his father may have been the William M. Carter, age about 50 years, who also testified.2,3

On 6 April 1849, he testified in the matter of the guardianship and schooling of John A. Turner, son of James H. Turner that he went with Nelson Bailey Turner to the north side of the ridge to Sanford Simpson to demand "John the ward & told Sanford that he thought as he were his guardian he had the right of selecting the place for the child to go to school at. Sanford told him that the boy should not go without the consent of his mother. Turner told Sanford he would take the boy to his mother he would go and see her about him. Sanford promised to send him back. Subsequently, Sanford stated the boy were brought there [to him] for his accommodation to go to school with his son. He further testified that the school house in is Trouts district, was very sorry and even the neighborhood is uniformed, quite dissipated, and that Sanford's children had very limited education. He stated the character of the schools is much better in N. B. Turner's neighborhood.2

John married Phoebe Ann Turner, daughter of Nelson Bailey Turner and Elizabeth Buntin, after 5 September 1849 in Sumner County, Tennessee.4

On 30 May 1874, his father-in-law directed in his will: " I also will and direct that if my son Jo. D. Turner shall be bound to pay and security matters that he is not bound on for J. T. Carter or said Carter shall fail to pay said Jo D. a note he now holds against him then the amount heretofore willed Mrs. Carter is hereby charged with said ____ liability and my executor is directed to discharge such security matters and not out of what I have willed her."5
