In 1853, "in the early spring, George and Henrietta left Illinois for Oregon in a covered wagon drawn by oxen, with their little son, Richard. They lost their oxen along the Snake River and had to leave their wagon of goods there and continue their journey in the wagon of Will Kenady, eventually arriving in Oregon on September 13, 1853. Another baby was on the way and in October, Mary Susan was born. They lived about a year near Aurora, Clackamas County, before moving to Benton County at Bell Fontaine, near Philomath where they lived until 1859, when they moved to Marion County near Hubbard. In 1867, they moved to Polk County, bought land near Buena Vista and built the family home where they lived the rest of their lives. They are buried in the family at Buena Vista Cemetery."

John Turner was born in 1863, son of Lawson Turner and Susan Turner, in Pike County, Illinois. Depending on when in 1863, the 1870 census agrees or could indicate a birth year of c1864.1,2

John Turner married Fluella Martin Fisher, 19, daughter of John P. Fisher and Lucilla S. Thompson, on 25 November 1884 in Ralls County, Missouri.3,4

John Turner died on 8 December 1902 in Corvallis, Benton County, Oregon,5 and was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Albany, Linn County, Oregon.
"After several days heavy drinking John Turner, ticket agent of the Corvalis & Eastern Railroad, committed suicide at his home in this city at 12:45 o'clock today by shooting himself through the head with a revolver. Turner had been putting in the forenoon by settling up his accounts at the various stores in town, and shortly before noon remarked to a friend that he did not owe any man a dollar. But he did not seem in his usual good spirits, seemingly being the subject of an attack of melancholy, and was drinking (unreadable OCR, but possibly 'considerably'). Shortly after 12 o'clock Turner started home, and went to an upstairs bedroom. At about 12:45 P. M., his family was startled by hearing the report of a revolver. Upon going up stairs, they were confronted by the awful sight of Turner's massive form (readable), in a reclining posture on the bed, weltering in a pool of blood, which flowed from bullet wound in the head. The dead man was in his shirt sleeves and had removed his collar and tie. The shooting was done with a heavy long-barrel Colt's revolver 38-caliber. Turner, after stretching himself on the bed, near the edge, had with his right hand placed the end of the revolver against the left temple; so near that the powder from the explosion burned the hair. After firing the fatal shot the hand dropped to the side, the wrist being bent so that when the revolver was released by the relaxing fingers, it laid by the side of the deceased, pointing toward his head. The bullet entered the left temple, above the line with the eye, at the margin of the hair, - and about two inches in front of the ear. The ball passed through the head, coming out even with the top of the right ear, and about one-half of an inch back of it. The ball lodged in the pillow, beneath the head of the deceased, where it was later found by the coroner's jury. No cause for Turner's action can be definitely assigned. The Corvallis & Eastern official's report that he was always a trusted employe, and there is no shortage in buiness accounts with them. On the dresser in the room was (sic) found two notes, one addressed to William Faber, proprietor of the Albany brewery, and the other follows: 'Flewella May God watch over you and my child, Any bills or notes come to you with my name to them, they are legitimate. Pay them all. Have Eiks and Woo[dman care for me, my wife and my child. JOHN.'"

"The note was written on the back of a programme for a musical recital, and was so scrambled and run together as to be hardly intelligible. Coroner Fortmiller was at once notified. He empaneled a jury and held an inquest in the room where the suicide was committed, before the body had been touched. A verdict of suicide was rendered in a very short time. John Turner was one of the best-known men in Albany. He came
here about 10 years ago from Milan, Mo., and entered the employ of Corvallis & Eastern Railroad Company as ticket agent, which position he has since retained. He was noted for his jovial disposition, and waa the greatest 'josher' in the city. He left a wife and daughter."6,5
