Item: My will and desire is, after the decease of my wife, that if my other four negroes, Dick and Aaron, men, and Patta and Nanny, women, be then living, I give and bequeath them and their increase to my son, William Harris, to him and his heirs.

Item: My will and desire is, that if my son, William Harris should die before he attains the lawful age, or without issue, that in that case, he the said William Harris should be further educated, the charges thereof shall be paid out of the estate given him, after the whole being sold, by my executors herein after named, and the remainder of the money arising from such sale be equally divided amongst all my children, or their legal representatives.

Item: My will and desire is, that my son William Harris to be under the tuition, direction and government of my son-in-law, John Rodes, until he shall attain to lawful age.

William Harris was born in 1652 in New Kent County, Virginia Colony. He was the son of Major Robert Harris, born 1630 and died 1700 in Hanover County, Virginia Colony who married Mary Claiborne Rice, born 1630 in King William County, Virginia Colony, and died 9 Feb 1709/10 at Doswell, Hanover County, Virginia Colony. She was the daughter of Col. William Claiborne (1587-1676), the first Secretary of the Virginia Colony and Elizabeth Butler, born c1630 and died on 9 Feb 1709.

The journal article goes on to say that Robert Harris was the son of Captain Thomas Harris of Jamestown and Adria Gurganey (not Osborne). That Captain Thomas Harris was a nephew of Sir Thomas Smith, Treasurer of the Virginia Company and Governor of the East India Company, and was grandson of "Customer" Smith who rose from obscurity in Queen Elizabeth's time by marrying the daughter of Sir Andrew Judd, the Lord Mayor, of humble origin himself. Sir William Harris, father of Captain Thomas, was descended from Sir Thomas Percy, executed in Aske's Rebellion, five Percy Earls of Northumberland, the Spencers, Calthorpes, Drury's, Howards, Wentworths, and Waldegraves.2,3,4

William Harris married Temperance Overton in St. Peter Parish, New Kent County, Virginia Colony.3

William Harris died on 8 March 1687 in Virginia Colony,5 and was buried in Weyanoke, Virginia Colony, in an old Colonial Church. "The church long ago went to ruins and on 1 Jul 1875, the tablet was taken to Norfolk, Va., and placed in the wall of St. Paul's old church.

     Inscription:
     "Here lyeth ye body of
     William Harris
who departed this life ye 8th day of March, 1687
     Aged 35 years."5

The memorial page on Find a Grave is filled with errors, stating he was born in 1699 and died 8 Mar 1730 with burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery, in Hanover County. It has him marrying Temperance in 1695 with Robert Harris born in 1696 which is quite impossible.6
