     "MR. ORRIN HEARN
The death of Mr. Orrin Hearn occurred Monday morning at his home, eight miles east of Lebanon. He was born and reared in Wilson County and had attained the ripe age of four score years. He was married to Miss Delia Huddleston, also of Wilson County, and he was an ardent member of the Methodist Church South. Mr. Hearn was a man of steadfast and upright principles, and while of a gentle and patient temperament, he was a man of strong convictions, was unmovable on all points where right and wrong, justice and injustice were concerned. He was one of the finest farmers in the county, and one of the most successful. His home has always been one of beauty, comfort and hospitality. Mr. Hearn is survived by his wife and five children, Mrs. Bert Woodard, of Fayetteville, Misses Orrie and Bessie Hearn and Dr. Robert Hearn, of Paducah, Ky; and Walter, who lives at the home place. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. T. H. Hinson, assisted by W. T. Haggard and Rev. J. M Vaden. The burial was at Cedar Grove cemetery. Mrs. Judge Woodard of Fayetteville, and Mr. Marcellus Hearn of Franklin attended the obsequies.

Emil Joh Helseth was born on 9 January 1895 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. He was the son of Lars Helseth and Elsie Pedersen both of whom were born in Norway.23

Emil registered for the draft on 5 June 1917 at North Bend, Coos County, Oregon. He was 22 years of age and working at the Buchuer Saw Mill Lumber Company. He is described as the support of his father, tall, slender with blue eyes and light hair.

Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. Obviously, not everyone who was registered for the draft was drafted or served in the military.

The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31 (men born between 5 Jun 1886 and 5 Jun 1896), meaning he had to register.4

He began military service on 29 March 1918 in the Army Medical Corps during World War I.5

He ended his military service on 1 April 1919.5

Emil, 25, married Gladys Leona Wells, daughter of William Lawson Wells and Sarah Frances Murphy, on 16 September 1920 at the home of the bride's parents in Halsey, Polk County, Oregon.
The wedding announcement states Emil was a student at the (Eugene) Bible University in his last year and plans on entering the ministry. Gladys was attending the University of Oregon and taking special work in the Bible University.6

Emil registered for the draft on 27 April 1942 at Camas, Clark County, Washington. He was 47 years of age and is described as being 6' 1", 160 pounds, with blue eyes and blonde/gray hair with a light complexion.

The Selective Training and Service Act of 1940, also known as the Burke–Wadsworth Act, enacted September 16, 1940, was the first peacetime conscription in United States history. The Selective Service Act required that men who had reached their 21st birthday but had not yet reached their 36th birthday register with local draft boards. Later, when the U.S. entered World War II after Pearl Harbor, all men from their 18th birthday until the day before their 45th birthday were made subject to military service, and all men from their 18th birthday until the day before their 65th birthday were required to register.7

He began military service on 5 June 1943.5

He ended his military service on 14 February 1946.5

"He was active in starting Keizer Christian Church. He was an elder emeritus of Garden Road Christian Church and a member of Salem Retreat Organization, an association of people who served in both world wars."8

Rev. Emil J. Helseth died on 11 February 1980 at age 855 and was buried in City View Cemetery, Salem, Marion County, Oregon.3
