James Higginbotham was born circa 1812 in Virginia. I believe he may have been the son or grandson of James Higginbotham who swore to his Revolutionary war service in Amherst County Virginia in December 1832 stating that he entered the Virginia service as Major of militia in 1776, serving around Williamsburg and continuing in duty as such till about 1778, when he was promoted to be colonel, of the Ninth Regiment, Virginia Continentals. He continued to serve, principally as a recruiting officer until the close of the war. James died intestate about March 1813, aged above eight years, leaving as heirs, Joseph C. Higginbotham, George W. Higginbotham, James Higginbotham, and Judity (Higginbotham) Dillard, but that letters of administration of his estate were never granted.2,3

Tirzah London, mother of the bride, gave consent to the marriage on 12 December 1835 at Amherst County, Virginia.4

Hugh Bone Hill was born on 4 December 1801, son of James McCreary Hill and Jane Bone, in North Carolina.3
He was also known as Rev Hugh Bone Hill.3

"Immediately after his birth, they (his parents])moved to Wilson County, Tennessee; then to Kentucky when he was 18."3

On 15 October 1823, he became a candidate for the ministry at Anderson Presbytery and was licensed in 1825.3

On 29 April 1829, he was ordained in the Presbyterian Church.3

Rev Hugh Bone Hill, 33, married Mary Read, 20, daughter of William Read and Mary Ann Turner, on 29 October 1835 in Sumner County, Tennessee, with Geo. Donnell, minister, officiating.

The Find A Grave biography states they were married on 22 Oct 1835 which disagrees with the marriage bond.1,2,3

Hugh's calling had taken him to the Cairo community. "Brother Hill was admired for his usefulness in camp-meetings, and often invited to revivals. However, lacking financial support, he eventually moved his family to serve Cane Ridge (Davidson Co.) and Ewing Chapel (Rutherford Co.) congregations. During this time, the Hills lost two children in quick succession."3

On 3 February 1849, William Read, in his will of this date, names his wife Polly Read; son Boyd Read; daughter Cornelia Duffy intermarried with Michael Duffy; son William Read; daughter Martha Rogan, wife of Francis Rogan; grandchildren Johel(?) and Henry Rickmon; Catharine Rickmon; granddaughter Tericia Read, child of the late Gen ? Read; Malvina Averett intermarried with Richd Averett; Catharine Nuly; Martha Nuly; daughter Clarissa Aston, wife of Joseph Aston; daughter Mary Hill, wife of H. B. Hill. [This is a very hard-to-read will and I do not know who some of these people are.]1,4

"Described by Hill's successor at Cane Ridge, Rev. Joseph L. Alexander, as 'among the most efficient of the second generation of Cumberland Presbyterian preachers,' H. B. Hill's final move was to Stewart's Creek near Old Jefferson, where he served the Jerusalem Congregation. During his time there he also assisted with the re-organization of Tusculum Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Nolensville Road."3

Hugh Bone Hill died from a skin infection on 26 February 1866 at age 64 in Rutherford County,3 and was buried in Ridley Cemetery, located across Stewart's Creek from the Sam Davis Home, Rutherford County, Tennessee.3 He was reburied circa 1918 in Mapleview Cemetery, Smyrna, Rutherford County, Tennessee. "The monument over his grave was originally erected in November, 1867, by the Middle Tennessee Synod and also moved to Mapleview."3
