Stephen Pettus Read was born on 2 March 1841, son of William Henry Read and Martha Helen Turner, at Palmer Springs Township, Mecklenburg County, Virginia.3,1

Stephen began military service on 12 May 1861 at Lombardy Grove, Mecklenburg County, Virginia, by enlisting in Capt. Robert D. Baskervill's Company F (Chambliss Grays), 14th Regiment Virginia Volunteer Infantry at the age of 20 as a Corporal.4

On 30 November 1861, his rank changed to 2nd Sergeant.4

On 5 May 1862, his rank changed to 1st Sergeant.4

On 23 January 1863, his rank changed to 2nd Lieutenant.4

On 16 May 1864, he was promoted to Captain.4

Stephen ended military service on 9 April 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Appomattox County, Virginia, by surrendering.4

Stephen Pettus Read, 25, married Mary Wright, 25, daughter of John M. Wright and Jane H. Davis, on 3 October 1866 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.3,2

"He was a planter and teacher, and a man of standing in his community. . . . The Reads have long been prominent in Southern Virginia, more especially in the counties of Mecklenburg and Charlotte.

Mr. Read's mother had a marked influence in shaping the character of her son, and fitting him for usefulness in life. In his early boyhood, he attended schools in Virginia and North Carolina. At fourteen, he became a salesman in a general merchandise store in his native county, and has spent most of his life in mercantile pursuits. At the same time, he helped his father on the farm, and thus acquired habits of industry which have proved of much value to him all through his life. Though owning many slaves, William H. Read required his children to help with the work on the plantation, and thus trained them not to despise labor.

In April, 1861, Mr. Read entered the Confederate army, and threw himself enthusiastically into the struggle for Southern independence. We soon find him corporal of Company F, 14th Virginia infantry, and later he reached the rank of captain. He served faithfully in the Confederate army in Pickett's division until the surrender at Appomattox, and fought in all the battles in which that famous division was engaged. He is one of the few surviving officers of that noble body of men.

The war over, Captain Read returned to his mercantile pursuits, and for some years led the quiet life of a country merchant. In 1870, he was elected supervisor, and held this office until 1883, being several years chairman of the board. In 1884, he was elected state senator from the twenty-fifth senatorial district, composed of the counties of Mecklenburg and Charlotte. Being the only Democratic senator from the fourth congressional district, Captain Read lay under a heavy responsibility as the legislature of 1884 had to undo a large part of the work done by the Readjuster legislature whose term had just expired. At the extra session of 1902-1903, Captain Read was elected to the house of delegates, and was reelected to the regular session of 1904. In 1907 he was again reelected to the legislature by a large majority and without personal solicitation on his part. He has taken a deep interest in educational matters but the acts which have claimed his special attention were those reducing the State tax and the "electrocution bill" which requires that all felons condemned to death shall be electrocuted at the State prison.

Captain Read is a temperance man of the conservative type, and was probably the first public man in Virginia to advocate state or local control of the liquor business. He has had the good fortune to live to see prohibition working more or less successfully in about seventy of the counties of Virginia, and in many towns. In the matter of roads and highways, Captain Read is again several years ahead of the public sentiment, or, certainly, ahead of legislation. During his legislative career, he faithfully endeavored to secure laws for the improvement of the roads. He is in favor of having two highways in each county; one from north to south, the other from east to west, crossing each other at a central point (say) the county courthouse. This would give the state a network of roads that would be off much value to all classes.

This bill failed of passage, but may pass in some future session, and would be a great success, though it would entail heavy expense at the start.

October 3, 1866, Captain Read was married to Mary Wright. They have had seven children, three of whom are now (1908) living.

His address is Palmer Springs, Mecklenburg County, Virginia."5

Stephen Pettus Read died of Cerebral Arteriosclerosis on 8 June 1917 at age 76 in Palmer Springs District, Mecklenburg County,3,6 and was buried in Union Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Palmer Springs, Mecklenburg County, Virginia.
Five other people rest in his area: Lewis Henry and Sallie Wright; Helen Lewis; Numa Fletcher; and, Helen Hayes.3,7,1

Stephen Pettus Read Jr was born on 5 July 1876, son of Stephen Pettus Read and Mary Wright, in Palmer Springs District, Mecklenburg County, Virginia.1,4

Stephen and Sadie M. Hayes obtained a marriage license on 16 December 1902 in Warren County, North Carolina.5

Stephen Pettus Read Jr, 26, married Sadie M. Hayes, 24, on 16 December 1902 in Warren County, North Carolina, with Charles F. Read, Methodist minister, officiating.5

Stephen and Catherine Mayfield Robinson obtained a marriage license on 25 July 1914 in Warren County, North Carolina.6

Stephen Pettus Read Jr, 38, married Catherine Mayfield Robinson, 27, on 28 July 1914 in Zion Methodist Episcopal Church, Warren County, North Carolina, with J. E. Holden, minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, officiated.6

Stephen registered for the draft on 12 September 1918 at Mecklenburg County, Virginia. He was 42 years of age and living in Palmer Springs where he was a farmer. He is described as Tall (maybe 6' 10"?), with a slender build, brown eyes and light hair.

Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. Obviously, not everyone who was registered for the draft was drafted or served in the military.

With no end in sight for the end of World War I, a third and final registration law was instituted which now included all men between the ages of 18 and 45 which added younger men that the previous registrations laws and an older group of men born between 1873 and 1900, meaning he had to register.7

On 4 July 1938, Amasa P. Read's obituary states he died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. R. B. Robinson, near Littleton, where he had been for a year since his health failed. Survivors: his wife, Mrs. Lillian Ricks Read; two daughters, Mrs. Arrington Davis of Henderson and Mrs. R. B. Robinson of Littleton; three sons, S. T. Read, of Warrenton, F. A. Read of Wood, and J. L. Read of Palmer Springs; and two brothers, J. W. Read of Palmer Springs and S. P. Read of Norlina.8

Stephen Pettus Read Jr died of Hypertensive heart disease and chronic nephritis due to Uremia on 7 February 1941 at age 64 in Smith Creek Township, Warren County, North Carolina,4 and was buried in Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery, Norlina, Warren County, North Carolina.4,9

On 8 February 1941, Stephen Pettus Read's obituary states he was survived by his wife, Kate Robinson Read; two sons, G. H. Read of Norlina and W. C. Read of Richmond; three daughters: Mrs. L. W. Vick of Emporia, Va; Mrs. George Collins of Palmer Springs, and Miss Katherine Read of Norlina; and a brother, John Read.10

Who Did William Read Really Marry?

An undocumented history states unequivocally that William Read married Mary (Polly) Bledsoe, daughter of Colonel Isaac Bledsoe.2 There is an application from a descendant of Francis Boyd Read for the Sons of the American Revolution based on this history which is incorrect.

Not only do we have a marriage record between William Read and Mary Ann (Polly) Turner,3 we have a deed from John Turner, Mary's father, to his son-in-law William Read.4 Finally, we have the will of William Read in which he names his daughter Polly Read. This should set the record straight as to exactly whom William Read married - Mary Ann Turner, sometimes known as Polly.5
William Read was born circa 1766 in Virginia Colony.6

William and Mary Ann Turner obtained a marriage bond on 11 February 1803 in Sumner County, Tennessee.3,7

William Read married Mary Ann Turner, daughter of John Turner and Mildred Suddarth, on 3 April 1803 in Sumner County, Tennessee.8,9

On 11 June 1812, John Turner conveyed 100 acres on Goose Creek adjacent to the land of David Henry to William Read (his son-in-law) for $10 in Sumner County, Tennessee.10

On 11 March 1845, William Read conveyed to Hubert Cloar 100 acres, being his 1/7 part & Joseph Desha's 1/7 part, known as belonging to the heirs of Col. Isaac Bledsoe in Belotes Bend for $30. Witnesses: J. L. Swaney, T. O. Parrish, Lewis Haynie. Registered 7 Jan 1848 at Sumner County, Tennessee.11

William Read left a will dated on 3 February 1849 in Sumner County, Tennessee. William Read, in his will of this date, names his wife Polly Read; son Boyd Read; daughter Cornelia Duffy intermarried with Michael Duffy; son William Read; daughter Martha Rogan, wife of Francis Rogan; grandchildren Johel(?) and Henry Rickmon; Catharine Rickmon; granddaughter Tericia Read, child of the late Gen ? Read; Malvina Averett intermarried with Richd Averett; Catharine Nuly; Martha Nuly; daughter Clarissa Aston, wife of Joseph Aston; daughter Mary Hill, wife of H. B. Hill. [This is a very hard-to-read will and I do not know who some of these people are.]1,12

William Read died before 1854 in Sumner County, Tennessee.13

His estate was probated in June 1854 in Sumner County, Tennessee.1,13
