Andrew Jackson Sowell was born on 27 June 1815, son of John Sowell and Rachel Carpenter, in Davidson County, Tennessee.4

"He moved with his family from Tennessee to Missouri and then settled in 1829" at Gonzales, Gonzales County, Texas.4

In 1833, "as a farmer, he and his brothers became the first white men to raise corn" at Guadalupe County, Texas.4

"During the Texas Revolution he took part in the battles of Gonzales, Concepción and the Grass Fight. He served in the garrison of the Alamo, but shortly before the final battle he and others were ordered out to obtain supplies. They were delayed in Gonzales buying cattle and other supplies and did not return to the Alamo before its fall."4

"After Texas gained its independence, he had a long career with the Texas Rangers, serving under commanders Hays, McCulloch, Mason, Caldwell and Callahan. He took part in the Mexican War, served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and was a noted scout and friend of Christopher (Kit) Carson."4,3

Andrew Jackson Sowell, 27, married Lucinda Smith Turner, 15, daughter of William Suddarth Turner and Elizabeth Pearl Smith, on 27 June 1842 in Guadalupe County, Texas. "When 15-year old Lucinda married 27-year-old Andrew Jackson Sowell on 27 June 1842 in Guadalupe County, he was already a famous person in the Republic of Texas - he was one of the defenders of the Alamo in 1836, but survived the massacre when Lieutenant Colonel Travis sent him out to secure beef and reinforcements for the garrison."

     They had seven children.3

Andrew Jackson Sowell died of dysentery on 4 January 1883 at age 67 at their farm about twelve miles east of Seguin,4 and was buried in Mofield Cemetery, Seguin, Guadalupe County, Texas.4

In 1957, "the State of Texas erected historical markers in the San Geronimo Cemetery to pay tribute to he and his brother John N. Sowell Jr."4

Asa Jarmon Lee Sowell was born on 30 April 1822, son of John Sowell and Rachel Carpenter, in Tennessee.3

He "was the youngest of the Sowell children. He had not reached his eighth birthday when he arrived in Texas with his parents. Like his brother Lewis he loved books, learning early to read and write and to speak the Spanish language."3

In 1839, "at age seventeen, with his big brothers Andrew and John, he joined Matthew Caldwell's 'Gonzales Rangers.3'"

Asa Jarmon Lee Sowell, 22, married Mary Mildred Turner, 14, daughter of William Suddarth Turner and Elizabeth Pearl Smith, on 29 August 1844. They had five children.3

In March 1845, "it was said that Asa and Calvin S. Turner were hired by Prince Solms to guide the German settlers to their land on the Comal River, where later was founded the town of New Braunfels. Asa served as district clerk in 1846 and as chief justice from 1870 to 1874 in Guadalupe County."3

There is a major error on the Find A Grave site which claims William S. Turner's great-grandfather was governor of North Carolina. That is another Turner branch entirely. I don't' know if I'm going to go to the trouble to correct this.3

Asa Jarmon Lee Sowell died on 21 December 1877 at age 553 and was buried in San Geronimo Cemetery, Seguin, Guadalupe County, Texas.3
