William Alexander Cunningham was born on 29 January 1843, son of George W. Cunningham and Susan T. Rives, in Franklin County, North Carolina.3

William Alexander Cunningham began military service on 8 June 1861 at Granville County, North Carolina, by enlisting for the duration of the war as a private in Company E of the 9th Regiment, North Carolina State Troops (1st Regiment, North Carolina Cavalry.)3

On 9 June 1863, he was wounded in the right leg and captured at Beverly Ford, Culpeper County, Virginia, and admitted to the Prince Street U.S.A. General Hospital at Alexandria, Virginia on 10 Jun and to the Lincoln U. S. A. General Hospital in Washington, D. C. on 4 Aug.3

On 22 August 1863, he was transferred to Baltimore, Maryland, where he was paroled on August 23 and delivered at City Point, Virginia on 24 Aug. Follwing his exchange, he was reported first at Petersburg Hospital and then later at home, wounded in the leg. He is listed on the Roll of Honor for his service during the battle at Beverly Ford.3

"Company muster roles indicate that William was again present by April 1864 when he was assigned to light duty at Salem, Virginia. On May 4, 1864, he was reported at General Hospital No. 9 at Richmond, Virginia and on May 5, 1864, at Jackson Hospital at Richmond, Virginia with a gunshot wound to the 'upper third left leg.' On May 18, 1864, he was hospitalized at C.S.A. General Hospital at Danville, Virginia. Returning to duty on June 2, 1864, he was again hospitalized at Danville, Virginia on June 4, 1864 and returned to duty on August 23, 1864. In September 1864, he was assigned to duty at Salem, Virginia through November 1864. Muster rolls for November and December show him present with his company. Although no official information is available following December 1864; William's personal letters indicate that he was with his company as late as March 1865. This lack of information may explain why muster rolls indicate his rank as private though he is pictured with corporal's chevrons in the photograph" [on the site].3

     Martha (--?--) married (--?--) Thorington.1

The only Martha Thorington I can find in the 1900 census was a 25-year old widow, born in Iowa, living in Rome Township, Jones County, Iowa, with a daughter Ella, age 4; and a brother, Elmer C., age 28, born in Iowa. I have no further evidence that that is the Martha Thorington who moved to Oregon.2

She was evidently either widowed or divorced prior to her marriage to Terisha.1

Martha Thorington married Terisha Dickerson, 75, son of Livingston T. Dickerson and Frances Turner, on 12 October 1903 in Umatilla County, Oregon. I can't find a marriage record for him in Umatillo County, Oregon between 1900 and 1904.1

I found a Martha Dickerson enumerated in the 1910 census in Portland Ward 1, Multnomah County, Oregon, 42 years of age, widowed and head of household. She had eighteen lodgers living within her household.3
