James Jones Turner was born in June 1839, son of Stephen H. Turner and Elizabeth (--?--), in Tennessee.3

James Jones Turner, 14, married Adeline Harper, 20, on 4 May 1854 in Sumner County, Tennessee.2,4

He attended Franklin College and graduated from Cumberland University law school. Before the Civil War he was an attorney in Gallatin.

From 1857-1859, he was a Tennessee State Representative. Between 1861 and 1863 he was a Tennessee State Senator.5

On 25 October 1860, a James Turner (I think it was this one) of Gallatin, took the stand and for two hours entertained the audience of Mr. Breckinridge's claims to the Presidency. . . . His entire time was consumed in the old, stale, worn out issues of negro-slavery. . . . Another thing noticeable in Mr. Turner's remarks, is, that he took the Calhoun ground on the right of a State to secede from the compact. This is an important question, and this an important admission; and we would be pleased to know if Democracy as a party endorses Mr. Turner."6

He performed his Military Service between 1861 and 1862 by serving as a Major of the 30th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, C. S. A. during the Civil War.5

In 1862, he was a prisoner of war held at Fort Warren Union Army Prison and was exchanged in September.5

He became a Lt. Colonel and then Colonel of the 30th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. He was wounded during the Battle of Chiamauga and in 1864, he was wounded during the Battle of Jonesboro.5

On 22 April 1870, Colonel James J. Turner is announced as a candidate for Superme Judge from Middle Tennessee.7

After the Civil War he was an attorney and judge in Gallatin, Tennessee.5

James Jones Turner died on 4 December 1901 at age 62 in Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee,5 and was buried in Gallatin City Cemetery, Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee.5
