Stephen, 27, married Sophia Meeks Cannon, daughter of Samuel James Cannon and Mary Duncan Porteus, on 18 December 1815 at Warren County, North Carolina.5

They moved to Montgomery County, Tennessee, in 1825 .6

On 24 November 1836, William McGuffy Rivers, Stephen's father, left one-ninth of his estate and from the proceeds remaining money to the surviving children of his son, Stephen Rives.2

Stephen Turner Rives Jr was born on 17 October 1838, son of Stephen Turner Rives and Sophia Meeks Cannon.1
He also is reported to have been born on 17 October 1832 in Montgomery County, Tennessee.2 and on 18 April 1836. His obituary said he was 82 years of age, making him born c1836.2

Stephen began military service on 31 May 1861 at Camp Duncan, Kentucky.3

He performed his Military Service by serving in Company L, 14th Tennessee Infantry, CSA.4,3

He was absent between Aug 1861 until 27 Sep 1861. He was promoted to Second Sergeant 30 Apr 1862; wounded at Cedar Run, Virginia 9 Aug 1862 and admitted 14 Aug 1862 to CSA General Hospital, Charlottesville, Virginia with a gunshot wound to his foot. He was then furloughed Oct 1862 and still absent when promoted to Second Lieutenant 25 Dec 1862 (to rank from 9 Aug 1862). He was promoted 27 Apr 1863 to Junior Second Lieutent ". . for skill & valor in the battles of Seven Pines and Cedar Run, in the last of which he was wounded . . . ." To rank from 27 Feb 1863. He was absent March and April 1863, but present May and June until captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania 3 Jul 1863 (he was also captured at Greencastle, Pennsylvania 5 Jul 1863 so he must have escaped after Gettysburg). He was sent from Fort McHenry, Maryland to Fort Delaware, Delaware 6 Jul 1863 and transferred to officers quarters. Stephen was paroled at Fort McHenry and sent to Fortess Monroe, Virginia for exchange 8 Jul 1863, but the exchange apparently was not acted upon. From there he was forwarded to Johnson's Island, Ohio 16 Sep 1863 from which he was paroled and forwarded to Point Lookout for exchange, 14 May 1865.

"Stepen Turner Rives was an ideal soldier, and I always depended on him in an emergency. On the 27th of June 1862 when our command broke General McClellan's center, Steve Rives was one of the first Confederate soldiers to cross the enemy's breastworks at Gaines Mills, Virginia and was in every engagement during the campaign. In the battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg) he was wounded. Dr. Wright, surgeon of the 14th Tennessee Regiment, had charge of the field hospital and as it was about 100 miles to the railroad he kept Stephen Turner Rives and many others with him in the field hospital. When General Lee crossed back to Virginia all in the hospital were taken prisoners and as soon as Stephen Turner Rives could be moved he was sent to Johnson's Island. When exchanged he returned to his regiment and was in every engagement until the surrender April 5, 1865." - Gen. William McComb in "The Confederate Veteran" magazine, unknown date.2,5

Stephen Turner Rives Jr, 28, married Mary H. Ragsdale, 25, on 28 May 1867.6

William McGuffy Rives was born on 24 December 1767, son of Thomas Henry Rives and Eleanor Neal, in Dinwiddie County, Virginia Colony.2

He performed his Military Service by serving as a Private in the North Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War.3

William and Mary Turner obtained a marriage bond on 5 January 1788 in Warren County, North Carolina, with Nicholas Bilbo as security.4,5,6,7

Stephen Turner, the father of the bride, and Thomas Rives, father of the groom, gave consent to the marriage on 5 January 1788 at Warren County, North Carolina.8

9 February 1801, William McGuffy Rives was security for the marriage bond of James Turner and Elizabeth Sims at Warren County, North Carolina.9,10,11,12

On 9 February 1801, William served as bondsman for the marriage bond of James Turner and Elizabeth Sims. The book, Some Turners of Virginia, states that James married Molly Allen. There is a marriage bond for a James Turner and Molly Allen in Warren County, North Carolina. However, I believe she has confused two separate James Turners who lived in Warren County. Susannah Hamner Turner's Bible specifically names his wife as Elizabeth. There were two marriage bonds for men named James Turner and women named Elizabeth. However, Elizabeth Sims fits better because of the birth of James and Elizabeth's children as listed in this bible. It should also be noted that Hamner Turner married Bathena Sims, probably a sister to Elizabeth.9,10,11

William McGuffy Rives left a will dated on 24 November 1836 in Warren County, North Carolina. An abstract of his will reads:
Wife Mary Rives - life estate in the land where I now live, containing 278 acres, also Negroes Fanny, Ansel, Frank, and Sarah. Wife Mary - various furniture and tools, etc. Daughter Susan T. Rives $300 (worth $6267.60 in 2013 dollars), trunk, mare, and Negro Rose. My executor is to sell the rest of my estate and from the proceeds remaining money is to be divided as follows: one-ninth to the surviving children of my son Stephen Rives, and the eight-ninths to be divided between my children Thomas Rives, William Rives, Robert Rives, James Rives, Nancy Mabry, Sally Moss, Rebecca Southall, and Susan T. Rives. At my wife's death, all property loaned to her is to be sold and proceeds divided into nine shares as designated above.

His estate was probated in May 1839 at Warren County, North Carolina, on the oaths of Howell B. Taylor and Thomas P. Paschall; Stephen Turner qualified as executor in Aug Court. John Hilliard, executor, was given leave to sell the perishable property of the deceased in August Court.15,16

An application for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution was approved on 26 Apr 1949 for Leon Rayburn, a descendant of William McGuffy Rives which provides information about the lineage of both William Rives.17
