James Asa Sowell was born in Seguin, Texas, August 16, 1841, the son of John N. Sowell Jr., one of the original settlers of Seguin. He was married in 1861 to his cousin Adaline, oldest daughter of Asa. J.L. Sowell.

James served through the Civil War in William P. Hardeman's Co. A of the Fourth Texas Cavalry Regiment, a good soldier in a right cause. He took part in the battles of Valverde and Glorieta Pass in New Mexico Territory. He returned with his command to Texas on foot, a weary march of 900 miles.

After about one month's stay at home he rejoined his regiment in Louisiana and participated in battles of Mansfield and Vermilionville, receiving a gunshot wound in the hand. He returned home just before the close of the war.

James served Guadalupe County in various official capacities and was prominent among his neighbors. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. He had been in bad health with rheumatism for some time – his death however, at age 49 was unexpected.

He was doorkeeper of the county alliance and a valued member of the order and every person who knew him will heavily feel his loss. Brave as a lion and gentle as a woman; a noble Christian gentleman. Put on his tombstone one single epitaph, "We Loved Him"

Rosa Bell Sowell was born circa 1865, daughter of James Asa Sowell and Araminta Adaline Sowell, in Texas.1

Rosa Bell Sowell and H. D. Steel obtained a marriage license on 26 July 1883 in Guadalupe County, Texas.2

Rosa Bell Sowell married H. D. Steel on 1 August 1883 in Guadalupe County, Texas.2

I have had absolutely no luck in finding census information for 1900, 1910, or 1920 for either Rosa or H. D. Steel. Nor can I find death information. There were two Rosa Steels who died in Texas as listed on FamilySearch: one in 1928 in Parker County (who turns out to have been married to Joseph G. Steele; the other in 1938 in Dallas County (who was not there in the 1920 census). Because only index information is available it is impossible to tell if either if Rosa.
