The Nellie Bowman Bausell Collection

Jeff and her sisters, Iva and Nellie, were responsible for compiling research notes and photocopies of original documents, as well as original documents, about the Turner family which were given to Stephen Kent Turner who shared with me. It was Iva who started the research which was picked up by Nellie and Jeff who passed on the material. I've named it the Nellie Bowman Bausell Collection.
Frances Jefferson Bowman was born on 19 December 1927, daughter of Isaac Pierce Bowman and Bessie Lenora Turner, in Virginia.1,2,3

Frances Jefferson Bowman died on 16 September 2016 at age 88 in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina,2 and was buried in Turner-Duncan Cemetery, Laurel Fork, Carroll County, Virginia. "Frances Jefferson Bowman, 88, died on Friday, September 16, 2016, in Winston-Salem, N.C. where she had made her home at Salemtowne for the past two years of her life. She chose Salemtowne to be near her niece, Meg Reavis and husband, Charles Reavis, who have been her faithful and dedicated advocates through her final years.

Jeff was born in Wytheville, Va. on December 19, 1927, to Bessie Turner Bowman and Isaac Pierce Bowman. She received her public school education in Carroll and Wythe counties, graduating from Wytheville High School in 1945.

Preceding her in death were sisters, Nellie Bausell, Iva Manley, Oleta Beeman, Virginia Shelton, and a brother, Douglas Bowman. She is survived by her sister, Betty Inman and husband, Arthur Inman of Wytheville, Va., and her much loved nieces and nephews.

Early in her career, Jeff became manager of a young and growing telephone answering service, Answering, Inc., in Washington, D.C. Featured in the Washington Post in 1954 as a young female executive, "Jeff is 26 years old, 5 feet 2 inches tall with a fetching Southern accent. She manages 35-40 telephone operators including office staff in Washington, D.C. and also manages branches of the company throughout the South."
Under her leadership, the business expanded to major Southern cities in the United States, Jamaica, and London, England. For many years she maintained residences in Washington, D.C. and London.

After retirement she returned to her beloved southwest Virginia and resided in Wytheville, Va. where she became a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. Her pride in her Virginia heritage kept her busy in many patriotic organizations including the Jamestown Society, Daughters of the Founders and Patriots, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Daughters of the Confederacy. Along with her passion for travel, she was a prolific reader, collector, and antiquarian with no boundaries in her interests in literature, art, history and music; but Virginia remained her primary focus.

A graveside memorial services will be conducted by the Rev. Brad Simpson with burial in the family cemetery at Turner-Duncan Cemetery in Laurel Fork, Carroll County, Va. at 11:00 AM on October 4, 2016.

John Hood Rives was born on 4 August 1826, son of James L. Rives and Elizabeth Hood.2

John Hood Rives, 22, married Elizabeth Ann Randle, 18, on 23 August 1848 in Greene County, Illinois.2,3

John Hood Rives died on 24 June 1904 at age 77 in Rockbridge,2 and was buried in Rives Cemetery, Rockbridge, Greene County, Illinois. "One of This Section's Best Known Residents Passed to His Reward. Died, on Friday, June 24 at 2:20pm, John Hood Rives, after an illness which continued through many weeks at his old home six miles southeast of Greenfield (**Rivesville, near Rockbridge). Aged seventy-seven years, ten months and twenty days. John Hood Rives was the son of James and Elizabeth (Hood) Rives. He was born August 4, 1826, in Eastern North Carolina, near the Virginia line. When he was about three months old his parents removed to Christian county, Kentucky, making the journey across the rough and thinly settled country in a one-horse cart and settled on and improved a farm. They lived there until the fall of 1884, when they moved to Green County, Illinois, and settled on section 24, town 10, range 10, where the family grew into man and womanhood. His mother died in 1851. Mr. Rives was married to Elizabeth Ann Randle, daughter of Rev, George D. and Lucy Randle, August 28, 1848, in the little log cabin which stood on the hill one mile south of Rockbridge, near where the wagon road crossed Macoupin creek. Barr Township, in the neighboring county of Macoupin, on a farm purchased of Dr. Milton Metcalf, where they resided until 1858. When they moved back and took up their residence on the old Rives homestead, which he purchased of his father, who decided to remove to Greenfield, where he died in 1866. His father, James Rives, was a zealous and a very useful local preacher of the Methodist Episcopal Church, while his father-in-law, Rev. Randle was one of the earliest and most successful pioneer circuit preachers in this section of Illinois. John Rives and his family continued to reside in the old homestead until February, 1868. When they moved into the new brick home just erected a short distance east of the old homestead. Here they lived and raised their family, the son, Robert bring the only child born in the new house. Mrs. Rives, wife of John H. died January 31, 1894, but Mr. Rives continued to reside there and remained active in his business operations till the frailties of his body during the past winter and spring compelled him to remain in doors, and even then he continued to dictate the management of his large farm until he became too feeble to further attend to business in a proper manner. There were born to John H. and Elizabeth Ann Rives ten children, sick of who are yet living. Two died in infancy; Ella, a daughter, died in 1870, aged fifteen; Edward N. the second son, died in Morrisonville, Illinois, February 28, 1904. Those surviving are Andrew J. of Greenfield; Charles W. Of Greenfield; John of Palmyra, Illinois, Elizabeth wife of Ralph Metcalf, of Greenfield; George of Fayette, and Robert Rives of Muldon, Mississippi Mar. Rives also leaves surviving him three brothers and six sisters, twenty-four grandchildren and several great grandchildren, besides numerous other relatives and hosts of friends who deeply regret his parting from us. As a man of business Mr. Rives was eminently, successful, being possessed of 1,400 acres of land in Greene County and 480 acres in Cumberland County, Illinois, yet with all was noted as a broad-minded, liberal man charitable almost to a fault. As a citizen he took a deep interest in public affairs, especially desiring that our public officials be men of irreproachable character and thoroughly qualified for their various positions of trust and honor. Mr. Rives served for a time on the board of county commissioners of Greene County and discharged his duties in a thorough and satisfactory manner. He was likewise the first supervisor from Rockbridge Township when township organization was established in Green County. As a Christian Mr. Rives was plain, constant and true. In the winter of 1847-8 he attended McKendree College at Lebanon, Illinois. For a term of six months, where in January, 1848, he sought and obtained forgiveness of sin and joined the M. E. church afterwards transferring his membership successively to Asbury. Rivesville, Fayette, and Greenfield of which later church he was a member at the time of his death. Mr. Rives has often stated to the writer that he never for a moment doubted his Christian experience and so remained faithful until the day of his death. Thus passing away a useful, honored and upright Christian character. Funeral services were held at the late residence on Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. T.J. Wheat, pastor of the M.E. church at Greenfield, and the vast multitude who attended, estimated by some at nearly one thousand gave ample proof of the high esteem in which he was held by his friends and neighbors. The interment took place in the Rives cemetery and short distance from the old homestead."2

George Washington Rives died on 28 March 1920 at age 82 in Alton, Madison County, Illinois,2 and was buried in Asbury Cemetery, Barr, Macoupin County, Illinois. "Argus, March, 1920

George W. RIVES died at the Nazareth Home in Alton, Ill., on Monday, March 29, 1920, at 11:20 a.m., of hardening of arteries following an illness, which had continued for several years. He was aged 82 years, 5 months and 13 days. The deceased was born on the old Rives homestead, six miles southeast of Greenfield, May 13, 1837, he being the son of Rev. James and Elizabeth (HOOD) RIVES. He was married to Miss Jemima BEAL who died some ten years ago. Of this union ten children were born, nine of whom are still living. Mr. RIVES for many years was a resident of the Barr vicinity where he became an extensive land owner and where he was recognized as a successful farmer and stock raiser. A few years ago his advanced age and failing vitality caused him to move to Greenfield, but his health did not improve so he was taken to Alton where he made his home for a time with his son, S.C. Rives, but his condition gradually growing more feeble he was taken to the Nazareth Home where he could be better cared for and receive proper medical treatment, and where he died; Mr. RIVES was a man who was widely known throughout this section, honorable in his dealings with his fellow man and one who was held in high esteem by his neighbors and friends. His body was brought in this city on Tuesday and taken to the old family home in Barr Township. Funeral services were conducted at Asbury church yesterday morning at 11 o'clock. the interment taking place in the adjoining cemetery. Corrections by(Great Granddaughter): Jemima Beal should be Jemima Deal.."2

Elizabeth Ann Randle was born on 6 October 1829 in Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois. She was the daughter of George Daughtery Randle (1806-1890) and Lucy Ann Pettus Arnold (1810-1890).2

Elizabeth Ann Randle, 18, married John Hood Rives, 22, son of James L. Rives and Elizabeth Hood, on 23 August 1848 in Greene County, Illinois.1,3

Elizabeth Ann Rives died on 2 February 1894 at age 64 in Greene County,2 and was buried in Rives Cemetery, Rockbridge, Greene County, Illinois. "Elizabeth A.C. Randle, daughter of Rev. G.D. and Lucy A.P. Randle, was born near Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, October 6, 1820, and died at her house near Fayette (Rivesville), Green County, Illinois. January 31, 1894.
She was converted and united with M.E. Church when 10 years of age, since which time she has lived a loyal and consistent member. On August 23, 1848 she was united in marriage with John H. Rives, of Greenfield. She was the mother of 10 children, three of whom has preceded her to the "home above." Mrs. Rives was a woman whom to know was to love; a true and faithful wife, a tender and loving mother, a kind and considerate neighbor. In her death the church loses a most devoted member. Her religion was not a mere profession, but a reality, being to her "more than meat and drink." She was in every respect a model woman. Her sterling qualities of mind and soul commanded the respect, admiration and love of all with whom she came in contact. "Her price was above rubies." She leaves to mourn her departure two brothers and two sisters, a husband, with whom she shared life's joys and sorrows for 46 years, six sons and one daughter, whose memories of mother will ever be pleasant and sacred. The funeral services will be held at the family residence on Friday, February 2, being conducted by the minister who also performed the marriage ceremony, Rev. Henry Stubblefield, her six sons bearing her remains to their last resting place."2
