James Lewis Turner was born on 28 October 1833, son of William Turner and Judith Chick, in Tennessee.1,4,5

James, 26, married Mary Elizabeth Hufford, 19, on 25 May 1860 in Clay Township, Lafayette County, Missouri.6,5

Thomas John Turner joined the Union Army during the Civil War. During the War, James L., his brother (a Confederate soldier), returned for a family reunion. Thomas attacked him with a knife and James shot and killed his brother.7

James performed his Military Service in 1862 in Company D, Upton Hayes Cavalry (Missouri 12th C.S.A.), a part of General Joseph Shelby's Iron Brigade. Gen. Shelby was also from Lafayette County..5

"My Cousin found a note I believe that was wrote by my Great Aunt Willa Turner that states the names of her Grandparents and great grandparents and also says that James L. went back to visit his mother in Kentucky in 1879 and that she gave him $500 of the $2200 that she received of John's back pension from the Union army. James came back and built a barn that know stands on the old Fishback place and bought grandmother a new sewing machine ( I have this sewing machine I use it for a night stand next to my bed my father refinished it and I now have it.) (I doubt if James L. knew where this money came from)."8

He attempted suicide twice by gun and then by axe. According to a family member, he had never been the same after a stroke two years previously. It was said he never got over killing his brother.8

James Lewis Turner died on 9 January 1892 at age 58 in Nevada, Vernon County, Missouri,9,5 and was buried in Pleasant Prairie Cemetery, Napoleon, Lafayette County, Missouri.4
