Herbert DeLeon Goodlett registered for the draft on 5 June 1917 at Roanoke, (Independent City), Virginia. He is listed as 28 years of age, single with two children, one of whom was under the age of 12. He was a Traveling Salesman for the Ferrsdine Chemical Corp. and claimed a physical disability part of which is unreadable. He is described as of medium height, slender build, with blue eyes and light colored hair.

Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. Obviously, not everyone who was registered for the draft was drafted or served in the military.

The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31 (men born between 5 Jun 1886 and 5 Jun 1896), meaning he had to register.2
