Joseph Alexander Copeland was born on 12 May 1826, son of John Copeland and Nancy C. McDowell, in Franklin County, Kentucky.4,2

I am basing my identification of this man on the fact that he stated on the 1880 census that his father was born in South Carolina and his mother, in North Carolina. These facts agree with 1850 census enumeration which places him within a Kentucky family. On his marriage record he stated his place of birth to be Kentucky.

Joseph, 30, married Mary Elizabeth Turner, 18, daughter of Stephen H. Turner and Elizabeth (--?--), on 26 September 1856.5

Joseph Alexander Copeland died on 31 December 1891 at age 652 and was buried in Hall Cemetery, Howe, Grayson County, Texas.2
