     Betsy Wickliffe Ray was born circa 1895 in Kentucky.2

     She was the daughter of Dr. W. R. Ray, who was the Representative from Shelby County in the Kentucky Legislature for the 1914-1915 term.3

     Betsy Wickliffe Ray married Howard Pendleton Rives, 34, son of Horace Plummer Rives and Nancy Agee Garrott, on 24 November 1917 in Camp Shelby, Hattiesburg, Forrest County, Mississippi.

     Betsy left Shelbyville, Kentucky ostensibly to be the guest of Mrs. E. B. Beard who was at the camp for a week on a visit to her brother, Capt. Rives, but the marriage was prearranged.1,3

     She was living at the time of her husband's death on 25 Apr 1927 according to his obituary.4

     Henry Pendleton Rives was born on 17 July 1877, son of Stephen Edward Rives and Annie Pendleton, in Christian County, Kentucky.5

     Henry, 23, married Rosa Bell Hampton, 18, on 2 June 1901 in Clarksville, Montgomery County, Tennessee.1,2

     He registered for the draft on 12 September 1918 at Todd County, Kentucky. He was 41 years of age and working as a Farm cropper. He is described as of medium height, medium build with blue eyes and brown hair.

     Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. Obviously, not everyone who was registered for the draft was drafted or served in the military.

     With no end in sight for the end of World War I, a third and final registration law was instituted which now included all men between the ages of 18 and 45 which added younger men that the previous registrations laws and an older group of men born between 1873 and 1900, meaning he had to register.5

     Henry Pendleton Rives died on 16 October 1955 at age 78 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California,3 and was buried in Rosedale Cemetery, Pembroke, Christian County, Kentucky.3

     On 18 October 1955,

     Funeral services for Henry Pendleton Rives, 78-year-old former resident of this county. will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Henninger & Lilly Funeral home.

     Mr. Rives died at his home in Los Angeles Sunday night following a lingering illness.

     The body is expected to arrive here Friday night and will be taken to the funeral home where it will remain until time for the services. The rites will be conducted by the Rev. Jack Down, associate pastor of the First Baptist Church and minister of the Ninth Street Baptist Chapel.

     Survivors include the widow. Mrs. Rosa Belle Hampton Rives; five daughters, Mrs. J. D. Kelly and Mrs. Bill King, both of the city, Mrs. M. D. Cornell of Lawton, Okla., Mrs C R. William and Mrs. Garnett Williams, and two sons, James and Johnny Rives, all of California.

     He also leaves two sisters, Miss Beanice Rives of Pembroke, and Mrs. Charles Davidson of Los Angeles.

     Following the services at the funeral home, burial will be at Rosedale Cemetery at Pembroke.

     Pall bearers will be J. D. Kelly, Bill King, William King, Malcolm King, James Muss and Chester Henderson.
