Louisa B. Turner was born in May 1805, daughter of James S. Turner and Nancy Goodrum, in Tennessee.2,3

Louisa married Jones W. Locke in 1838. I cannot find a marriage record on Ancestry of Familysearch as of 31 Jan 2021.1,4

On 16 October 1873, she was living at Hartsville, Trousdale County, Tennessee.1

On 16 October 1873, Louisa B. Turner Locke wrote a letter to the historian Lyman S. Draper from Hartsville, Trousdale County, Tennessee, in which she provided detailed information about her father (James Turner), grandparents (John Turner and Millie Suddarth), aunts (Sally Caffrey, Mary Read, and Elizabeth Tinsley), uncles (Terisha Turner, William Turner), and sister (Mary A. Tinsley). She also states that Samuel S. Turner was the son of her uncle Terisha Turner. She even comments on "old Aunt Lyon" who died in Carthage, Tennessee at a very old age. I am unsure exactly who this old aunt is.1

On 20 October 1873, Samuel S. Turner wrote another letter on this date to historian Lyman S. Draper in which he names his grandfather John Turner, his father Terisha Turner and his uncle James Turner. He mentions James' daughter Louisa B. Locke who lived in Hartsville, Tennessee. He also mentions his older brother Sumpter Turner and Sumpter's son, Thomas Sumpter Turner who then lived in Virginia.5

On 2 December 1873, Mary Ann Tinsley wrote a letter to Lyman S. Draper on this date in which she references her sister, Louisa B. Locke, and a deceased brother, John G. Turner who resided in Sumner County, Tennessee. She states her grandmother was Milley Suddarth who married John Turner in Albemarle County, Virginia and later moved to Sumner County. Mary thinks Milley died there in 1809 or 1810. Mary also mentions Milley's sister, Agnes Suddarth, who married Francis Weathered and moved to Sumner County. She states that her own father was James S. Turner and that his sister Elizabeth married Moses Tinsley. Mary then states she married Isaac T. Tinsley, son of Elizabeth and Moses Tinsley (making Isaac her first cousin). Finally, she mentions her cousin Sumpter Turner who lived in New Orleans.6

Louisa B. Locke died on 11 March 1893 at age 873 and was buried in Hartsville Cemetery, Hartsville, Trousdale County, Tennessee.3

John Rufus Sheldon was born on 17 March 1880 in Sterling, Whiteside County, Illinois.2,3 He was also known as J. A.4

John, 25, married Miranda Page Turner, 25, daughter of Andrew Jackson Turner and Eudora Clementine McCauley, on 19 November 1905 in Lewis County, Idaho.4,5

John registered for the draft on 12 September 1918 at Bureau County, Illinois. He was 38 years of age and living in Tampico, Whiteside County, Illinois. He is described as a Farmer, Tall, Slender build, with blue eyes and dark hair.

Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. Obviously, not everyone who was registered for the draft was drafted or served in the military.

With no end in sight for the end of World War I, a third and final registration law was instituted which now included all men between the ages of 18 and 45 which added younger men that the previous registrations laws and an older group of men born between 1873 and 1900, meaning he had to register.2

According to the cited source, John and Miranda lived in Oklahoma where he was a physician.4 Obviously, this is incorrect as proven by the census enumerations and draft registrations.

John Rufus Sheldon registered for the draft on 27 April 1942 at Tampico, Whiteside County, Illinois. He was 62 years of age and is described as being 5' 9 1/2" in height, 140 pounds, with blue eyes, gray hair and a light complexion.

The Selective Training and Service Act of 1940, also known as the Burke–Wadsworth Act, enacted September 16, 1940, was the first peacetime conscription in United States history. The Selective Service Act required that men who had reached their 21st birthday but had not yet reached their 36th birthday register with local draft boards. Later, when the U.S. entered World War II after Pearl Harbor, all men from their 18th birthday until the day before their 45th birthday were made subject to military service, and all men from their 18th birthday until the day before their 65th birthday were required to register.6

John Rufus Sheldon died in December 1976 at age 967 and was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Sterling, Whiteside County, Illinois.8
